The Jekt Trade Museum tells the story of the coastal culture and the history of how the jektes (traditional Norwegian cargo boats) were responsible for nearly all transport of goods from Northern Norway and large parts of the west coast for over 400 years! We offer experiences and reflections, where you will hear about the hardships and life on board, the history of the stockfish trade, power and powerlessness, profit and risk – all while you can smell the tar and dried fish.
On June 1st, the Jektefartsmuseum opened a temporary exhibition called "Coastal Women". This exhibition features a variety of garments worn by women in the fisher-farmer society and sheds light on traditional women's crafts related to the old flossed rug used by fishermen as bedding on the jekt. You will learn about the significant amount of work involved in the production of food items – such as 42 kg of flatbread and the impressive number of mittens that had to be knitted to meet the needs of the many fishermen.
